Playing on Velven

Everything on Velven can be played without an account. Signing in adds a handle, your own page, friends, rooms to play in together, comments, and achievements that add up to points.

Your account

Sign in with GitHub, Google or an email link and pick a handle. Your handle is your name on Velven and your page's address, https://velven.ai/<handle>. Change your display name, your avatar and who sees your friends in your settings, and delete your account there too.

A space can ask you to sign in with Velven inside its frame. It then knows your handle, your avatar and an id for your account, never your email, and keeps your scores, saves and achievements under your handle.

Achievements and points

Spaces award achievements for what you do in them. On a listed space with a creator each is worth 10 points, and your points add up across every such space on your page; an unlisted page's achievements, and a creator's own on their own space, add none. When you earn one, a notice shows over the corner of the space for a moment.

  • A space's page lists its achievements under the frame, with the share of its players who hold each one and the ones you have.
  • A secret achievement stays hidden, title and all, until you earn it.
  • Your page's Achievements tab shows your points and your most recent unlocks.

Leaderboards

A space with a leaderboard ranks your scores under your handle. Some draw the board inside the game; others show it on the space's page and behind the trophy button in the bar under the frame. Friends shows only you and your friends, ranked among yourselves.

Each board says whether its scores were checked by the space's own server or sent by the page. Scores a page sends are only as honest as a browser can be.

Friends

Friends are mutual. Press Add friend on someone's page; they see the request in their notifications and accept or decline it. The same button cancels a request you sent, and removes a friend. There are no direct messages.

Being friends lets you:

  • see what each other is playing, and when you were last on Velven;
  • invite each other to rooms, and join a friend's room from their name;
  • filter a leaderboard to friends;
  • open rooms only friends can join.

The Friends tab on your page lists your friends. Anyone can see it unless you turn on Keep my friends list private in your settings; then only you do. Pending requests are always yours alone.

What your friends see

While you have a space open, signed in, your friends see Playing and its title, with a line the space may add, such as your level. After you leave, they see when you were last seen. When you are in a room they can join, they get a Join button beside your name.

Only your friends see this, in the friends panel under the bell and on your page. People who are not your friends see none of it.

Play together in rooms

A space that supports it lets you open a room for 2 to 16 players and play together. How you open one, and what a room is for, is up to the space.

  • A room is public (anyone playing the space can find it), for friends only, or private (only people with its link or an invite).
  • An invite from a friend arrives in your notifications, and as a card on whatever Velven page you have open, with Join. An invite link opens the space and puts you straight in the room.
  • Whoever opened the room hosts it; when they leave, the player who has been in longest takes over. The host can remove a player, who cannot come back to that room.
  • Chat in a room goes to everyone in it, 500 characters a line. Report a line from where the space shows it.

Comments

Every space's page has comments under its text, newest first, with a count in the bar under the frame. Sign in to post, up to 2,000 characters, to reply one level deep and to like. The creator's comments and replies are marked Creator.

  • Delete your own comment at any time. A deleted comment with replies shows as deleted so the replies still read.
  • A space's creator can delete any comment on their space.
  • Report a comment you think breaks the content policy: offensive, harassment, spam, cheating, something else. Reports go to the Velven team.

You can post 5 comments a minute and 30 an hour, so a thread stays readable.

Notifications

The bell in the top bar counts what you have not seen yet. Open it for the list:

A friend request, and a request accepted
Where it takes you
Their page; a request has Accept and Decline in the list

An invite to a room
Where it takes you
The space, into the room
What

Where it takes you

What

Where it takes you
Your space's edit page

The bell's Friends tab is the friends panel: who is online and what they are playing. Velven sends no email notifications.

Your page

Every handle has a page. Its header shows the avatar, the handle, the points, and to friends whether the person is online. Below are 3 tabs:

  • Spaces: the spaces they published.
  • Achievements: their points and recent unlocks.
  • Friends: their friends, unless they keep the list private.

Levels and replays you make

Some spaces let you save what you make, such as a level, a map or a replay, and share it. What you share publicly anyone playing that space can find and play; a private item is yours alone. The space shows these, never Velven's own pages.

Delete your own items from inside the space, where it offers that; the space's creator can delete them too. Report someone else's item from where the space shows it.

Report a problem

Press Feedback on a space's page to tell the Velven team something is wrong with it: it is broken, offensive, not what it says, or someone else's work. Reports go to Velven, not to the creator. The content policy says what is not allowed and what happens to a space that several people report.

Note: How Velven handles what it keeps about you is in the privacy policy.
